19 East 64th Street

This landmark exhibition was Mesler’s fourth show with Lévy Gorvy Dayan and the first to be held in New York City. New paintings, sculptures, and installations spread across the two floors of the Beaux-Arts townhouse. "Kitchens are Good Rooms to Cry In" delved into Mesler’s personal journey living in Los Angeles as a young boy through his passage into fatherhood and his personal transformation as an artist while overcoming addiction. All depicted through three vignettes representing childhood, adulthood, and midlife, Mesler questions his life’s journey through a display of works across various mediums revealing the ongoing search for self, while overcoming a haunting past, all the while finding space for humor. A secret room displaying paintings of clowns who were once rabbis is yet another one of the mysteries to Joel Messler’s psyche.
